Ableton Mixing eBook 4 – Equalisation
Book 4, Ableton Mixing eBook 4 – Equalisation, covers EQ and colourisation.
In this eBook we will explain what EQ is, How to EQ in the mix, The fundamentals of understanding sound, harmonics, and the difference between consonance and dissonance.
Using a parametric equaliser as an example, we will break down the anatomy and parameters of an EQ unit. Explaining each of the filter types such as peaks, notches and shelving EQs. We will then describe the different kinds of EQ unit such as single band, graphic eq’s, shelving, parametric and linear phase.
In the second part of this book is a breakdown of all the EQ ranges in the frequency spectrum. This includes typical EQ zones and outcomes. We will also look at EQ strategies and implement EQ in the mix, such as corrective, creative and mix separation EQ (unmasking)
Further EQ strategies, tips and techniques included in this book are the sweeping technique to find unwanted resonances, frequency highlighting, cuts versus boosts, and more advanced techniques such as mid/side EQ, the use of Fletcher-Munson (equal loudness) curves, match EQ, and dynamic/active eq.
